All aboard for an exciting river trip

The Sabrina will be hosting our March social

For our branch social next month we’ll be taking to the water to enjoy a cruise on the Sabrina river boat.

The outing, on 19 March, will cost £10.00 per person including a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit. We need to arrive at Victoria Quay by 10.45 for an 11.00 start, as the Sabrina's crew have asked that we be there 15 minutes early — and since it's not a private hire, we wouldn't want them to go without us!

There is no parking right by the quay, so if walking is a problem it is suggested that members are dropped off by the boat and carers/friends park the car nearby.

There is wheelchair access on the boat for four wheelchairs but access to the toilets is up five steps (so maybe go first).

The journey takes 45 minutes. We'll enjoy beautiful views along the River Severn and photo opportunities on the outward journey before listening to an entertaining commentary from the captain on the return leg.

A wide range of hot and cold drinks will be available, as well as snacks from the onboard bar, which will be served to your table by the hospitality team.

Please encourage friends and carers to come as well — it should be really good fun!

Payment should be made to Treasurer Jane Williams, preferably by bank transfer, no later than 12 March.

Bank details are as follows:

Parkinson's Disease Society of the UK, Sort Code 20-00-00, Account no. 63487652.

Chance to have a go at table tennis

The table tennis taster session was a great success!

Fancy trying table tennis for people with Parkinson’s? It’s very similar to ordinary table tennis, but we won't be playing doubles.

Shrewsbury Parkinson's are thrilled to announce that following the popular taster session, there will be a session (exclusive to us) held every other Monday morning starting Monday, 3 February, from 10am-12pm.

The sessions (which are FREE) will be held at the Sports Village, Sundorne Road, Shrewsbury SY1 4RQ. The Sports Village is wheelchair accessible and there is plenty of parking and nearby public transport.

There’s no need to book — just turn up. Friends and carers are welcome and there’s a cafe for anyone not playing.

Fresh new look for typeface and logo

Blue Parkinson's UK logo with tulip design and slogan "For every Parkinson's journey" on a white background.

Parkinson’s UK has recently undergone a brand refresh which is designed to make things more accessible and relevant for everyone in the Parkinson’s community.

One major update is the new logo, which features a tulip symbol. This tulip represents a variety developed by Dutch horticulturist J.W.S. Van der Wereld. He named it after Dr. James Parkinson, who first identified Parkinson’s as a medical condition in 1817.

The new strapline, For every Parkinson’s journey, emphasises that the organisation is here for everyone. Together with the wider community, it aims to unite people living with Parkinson’s across the UK.

Accessibility has been a major focus of this refresh, ensuring it’s easier for people to find information, support and services. The updated brand includes Parkinsans, a specially designed accessible typeface, and new brand colours to make materials clearer and more visually inclusive for everyone.

Russell's will share with us the extraordinary story of the Battle of Shrewsbury, a bloody battle which took place right here on our doorstep and which was a turning point in the struggle for the English throne!
